New excerpt from historical novel, CONFLICT!

conflict200x300Here’s a new excerpt from my historical novel, CONFLICT, sequel to CANE, which takes the story into the Civil War.

Two men, one war. Can love survive when each takes a different side?

Leaving his lover behind to support the abolitionist cause, Piet Van Leyden finds himself leading one of the first all-black Union troops into the heart of battle. Reuniting with free slave and former love Joss brings some comfort, but will his presence tempt Piet into forgetting the love waiting for him at home?

Sebastian Cane wonders how he’s able to go on without Piet by his side. When a series of unfortunate events lands him a prisoner of the Union, Seb knows he must rely on his wits and his love for Piet to survive…and get home to him.

It was cold in the tent; damn it, was cold nearly all the time. It seemed forever since Pieter had actually been inside a brick building. He pulled the blanket off his cot and wrapped it around him. Pieter could hardly remember the last time he had felt really comfortable and cozy. Then he suddenly remembered one warm day, sitting on a veranda eating a picnic lunch. It had only been a couple of days after he’d arrived at Morning Star. Sebastian had been showing him around the vast plantation when they took a rest and ate. They’d sat comfortably on the wooden veranda of the old Blue Bayou plantation house, sharing a basket of food, while his new employer had told him of the history of his family and the plantation. Even then, Pieter had known he was in love with the man.

Smiling, Pieter knew it was the emotion inside that had made him feel warm that day as much as the sun beating down on them. That feeling was still there, deep inside, and as he allowed the sense memory to flow over him, Pieter’s heart beat faster. His cock filled as he imagined Sebastian’s lips on his, and his hands caressing his body. It had been so long and he missed his lover terribly.

Sighing, Pieter couldn’t deny that he regretted leaving his lover back in Louisiana, but he was honest enough to admit that he could never have stayed there in the circumstances. He wished every day that Seb could have come with him, but as much as he wished it could be otherwise, he couldn’t blame Sebastian for clinging to the only life he knew.

Belatedly, he realized that yet again his hand was in his pocket and he was running the small silver button between his fingers. He stopped the movement, grasping the button tightly and pulling it free. It rested in the palm of his hand, glinting slightly in the flickering candlelight. It was all he had of Sebastian with him and it had long been a kind of talisman. A constant reminder of the man he loved, the man he missed so very much.

Pieter could still see the look in Sebastian’s eyes as he dropped the button into his hand when he left to travel north. He had never forgotten the trust Sebastian placed in him, knowing that he would come home some day. To Pieter, wherever Sebastian was, that was home.

CANE, a new excerpt from my historical romance

CanePhaze(200x300)I thought it was past time I posted a new excerpt from my popular historical novel, CANE:

Privileged young Pieter may have grown up on a sugar cane plantation, but that doesn’t mean he agrees with the way his father runs things. He falls in love with Joss, one of his father’s slaves, and their affair sets off a chain of events that is destined to tear them apart.
When Pieter’s father dies, he returns home hoping to find Joss. It’s too late for their love, but maybe it’s not too late for Pieter to find happiness. As he makes his way to America, Pieter realizes old conflicts still rage, and even as he finds a new love, danger stalks his every move. Can Pieter learn to overcome the hate and fear that threaten to tear his world apart?

Joss was working hard with the other field hands, trimming the young cane plants. He had just straightened up, stretching to ease the ache in his back, when he heard Pieter call to him.

“Joss, I need some help.”

“Yes, sir,” he replied, hurrying to do his master’s bidding.

Not that Joss really thought of Pieter as his master, though he had to behave as if he did. Joss never called him master, the way some of the other slaves did. Pieter did not ask it, but the slaves were used to giving the title to the older Van Leyden and automatically used it with Pieter. To Joss, Pieter was his boyhood friend, his mentor…his lover. Joss knew he was living in a kind of limbo, knowing that his time with Pieter was temporary. Joss hated that because he really loved Pieter. He had thought at first the feelings had just been the love of a surrogate brother, but when Pieter had embraced him on his return from abroad, it wasn’t brotherly feelings that stirred deep within him.

It had been a surprise to find that Pieter had such feelings toward him, too. Joss could still remember that first time Pieter touched him. Even though he had wanted his friend’s touch, Joss had been afraid that Pieter would only be using him. The prospect of the Master exercising what many slave owners considered to be their right was a fear his sister, and the other pretty young slaves lived with constantly. Boys and men were less susceptible, and though such couplings were rare and shrouded in secrecy, they did happen.

So, when Pieter touched him with such tender reverence, Joss had been shocked. He learned then that he hadn’t been mistaken about the friend from his youth; Pieter was showing that he cared, that it wasn’t just the use of a convenient body he wanted from Joss. Pieter was seeking an emotional connection and Joss was more than happy to give it to him.

They had enjoyed each other many times since that first night almost two years ago, but Joss never forgot that first time, when he had learned that not all slave owners were the same.

He knew Pieter cared for him, loved him in a way, but also that it was not with the soul deep emotion Joss felt himself when Pieter took him, driving deep into his body. Joss didn’t know how he could sense the difference in their emotional attachment but he knew he was right. Pieter said things to him when they were having sex and Joss was sure when he spoke them aloud, Pieter believed his own words, but Joss knew that what his lover promised could never be. There was no way that he, a black slave, could ever be with a white master as anything but property to be used, a catamite. Joss had heard the word for the first time a few months back, read to him from a biblical story. He couldn’t remember which story it was, but the word he would never forget—catamite, a boy or young man kept by a sodomite. That was the reality of what Joss was, not that Pieter would ever accept it, but it was better for Joss to do so. As odd it as might sound, it was better for his peace of mind. Dreams of anything more would only destroy him.

ANOTHER SECRET is released today!

AnotherSecret_medReleased today by Amber Allure, ANOTHER SECRET, a contemporary dark fantasy gay romance, and my first foray into writing a shifter story!

After yet another bad dream, Leland accepts he can no longer keep his secret; the time had come to confess all to his best friend, Drew. He sets out early in the morning, determined yet fearful of Drew’s reaction to what he must tell him. Leland has loved Drew ever since they were teenagers and together they experimented with their sexuality, but Drew has only ever been his best friend. He dreads maybe even losing that when Drew learns the truth.

Halfway through the forest to Drew’s home, however, Leland is forced to take cover when he sees a large grey wolf tailing another man. His concern turns to shock when the man abruptly shifts to become a wolf and attacks the grey wolf.

The fight is swift and bloody and ends when the man-wolf runs off. Leland gets his second shock of the morning when the grey wolf abruptly shifts to become human. To become Drew. Too surprised to do more than watch as his now naked best friend rushes off, Leland is in for yet another surprise when he finally gathers the courage and confronts Drew later that morning.

He was just about to step out into a small clearing when he saw it; a large grey wolf, so dark as to be almost black. It was a beautiful specimen. Leland kept very still not wanting to draw the animal’s attention. It looked as if the wolf was already trailing something by the way it was behaving. Even as he watched, the wolf sniffed the air and quickened its pace. Apparently it had found its prey. As Leland slipped back behind the tree shock slid through him as he spied the wolf’s target. It was a man.

Leland was in two minds what to do. His immediate reaction was to shout a warning but that could induce the wolf to attack sooner. Cursing himself for being a fool, Leland ran as quietly and swiftly as he could around the clearing toward the unsuspecting victim. Sliding to a halt behind a large tree, Leland saw the wolf lowering itself as if getting set to spring. Leland opened his mouth to yell a warning but the man was not as unaware as Leland assumed. The man spun to face the wolf, snarling and growling as he tore the clothes from his body. Leland, his mouth still hanging open, watched in total shock.

Almost too quickly for Leland to follow, the man’s form shifted and changed. From two feet he dropped to all fours, fingers and toes becoming sharp claws. Pale skin sprouted dark brown fur as his face elongated and his teeth became sharp points frothed with saliva.

The two wolves leapt at each other, meeting mid-flight to clash and fall to the earth, landing on steady feet, teeth bared as they snarled at each other. They circled, gazes locked, until they charged again.

Leland gripped the tree so tightly the bark dug into his palms as he watched the two animals fight it out. He was battling the urge to run for safety, not sure if the wolves would break apart and come after him instead. His body was telling him to stay where he was, hopefully well and truly hidden, but his brain was debating how safe that would be when one of the animals won and sensed a new victim nearby. Even though he knew one of them was in fact a man who had changed – shifted? – into a wolf, Leland found it hard to think of it as anything but an animal. He certainly wasn’t behaving like a human as he bit and tore at the other wolf’s hide. Leland also wondered what sort of condition the man-wolf would be in assuming he survived the fight, his body was already streaked with blood from the attack.

It appeared the two wolves were well matched; neither seemed able to gain the upper hand in the battle. The dark grey wolf suddenly leapt and landed hard on the man-wolf’s back and he let out a howl which quickly turned into a snarl as he fought his way from beneath the dark grey animal. With a snap of his jaws and a growl the man-wolf turned and ran for the cover of the trees opposite to where Leland was hiding. The dark grey wolf tensed as if to follow, before it limped a few steps back, eyes constantly searching the surrounding trees to ensure the other wolf didn’t return. After a few minutes the wolf sat on its haunches and began to lick at its wounds.

Leland allowed himself to relax a little, deciding it was best he stay where he was. He was pretty sure the wolf would sneak off to its den as soon as the animal felt secure enough to move on. He kept a close eye on it, not allowing his caution to slide – though after a minute or so he did wonder if perhaps he was more shocked than he thought, or if maybe he was more tired than he’d realized and his vision was affected. He couldn’t be seeing what he thought, he couldn’t!

ANOTHER SECRET is also part of the Amber Pax Collection, I Know What You Did. You can purchase the book individually, but if you choose to buy the Collection (5 novellas) it will be at a reduced price – check out the page for information.

MeanderingThoughtsJust a short sensual scene that I hope you enjoy:)

“I want to make love in the living room.”

Rick licked his suddenly dry lips.  “We can make love in every room in the house if you want.”

Peter laughed, “Eventually.  Let’s just start in here, shall we?”  He took hold of Rick’s hand and led him into the living room, coming to a halt on the thick rug in front of the presently unlit fire.

“You want I should light it?” Rick asked, his eyes never leaving Peter.

“Nah, you can warm me up.”

“Perfect.” Rick beamed.  Then he remembered something.  “Hang on,” he said and bolted for his bedroom.  Peter frowned wondering what on earth he was up to, smiling when he returned a moment later holding a small bottle.  “Don’t want to start without this,” he grinned, dropping the lube on the soft rug.  “Now where were we?  Ah, I remember.”

Keeping his eyes on his lover, Rick began to undress, slowly letting his fingers linger over his skin.  Peter watched for a few electric seconds before his fingers began to unfasten his own shirt.

When there were both completely naked they stood there staring at each other.  “I can just look,” Rick said softly. “I don’t have to fumble under a blanket in the dark, or rush because we don’t have much time.  I can savor you.  I can look my fill and touch every inch of you.”

Peter’s breath hitched at the naked desire in Rick’s voice, afraid to speak and spoil his mood.  It was so erotic to create such a need in another human being and he instinctively understood that he should let Rick take the lead. Peter knew he couldn’t possibly be disappointed.

ZIMAYA HEIGHTS, gay romantic fantasy

ZimayaHeights200x300The jungle may be hot and dangerous, but it’s nothing compared to the scorching heat sparking between Will and Gant.

Gant pulled the towel from his hair as the washroom door was sharply closed. He frowned and looked at the door, wondering if he’d missed something. Shrugging, he dropped the towel and quickly pulled on pair of loose sleep pants. He usually didn’t bother with the top but he thought he’d better wear one tonight. Will seemed to be particularly nervous at sleeping by his side.

Sighing, Gant pulled on the top and flopped down on the bed, wishing it was already next morning. He firmly believed it was going to be a long night.

As if in confirmation, Will walked out of the washroom, clad only in a towel. “Doesn’t this place run to robes?” he asked.

“Apparently, just lots of towels.” Gant grinned, eyes tracking up and down Will’s body. He made himself glance away before Will realized what he was doing.

Will looked unsure for a moment before he grabbed his night attire and took it back into the washroom.

Gant was at once both relieved and frustrated. He would have loved to see Will in all his naked glory, but knew very well it would have been a mistake. He rolled off the bed and turning back the covers he slid underneath them, and lay back, waiting for Will to return, which he did almost immediately. Will glanced at Gant lying in the bed but didn’t say anything. He walked swiftly around to the other side and climbed into the bed.

Still not looking at him, Will flicked off the light bar over the bed, saying, “See you in the morning,” as he did so.

Gant felt the bed dip as Will settled. Gant allowed his eyes to become accustomed to the dim light before turning to look at Will. The man was lying on his back, his arms placed rigidly by his side on top of the covers. He looked more like a statue than a living man and seemed decidedly uncomfortable.

“Relax, Will, or neither of us is going to get any sleep,” Gant said gently. “You trust me, don’t you? And I trust you. Just relax.”

Softly, Will spoke, “Of course I trust you. I’ll try. I’m not even sure why I feel so tense.”

Gant didn’t say anything else; he just turned onto his side, his back to Will. He kept his breathing as even as he could, listening. After a few moments, the bed dipped again as Will also turned over, and eventually he heard Will’s breathing slow and even out. When he thought Will was finally asleep, Gant allowed himself to relax.

* * * *

Surely it can’t be morning already, Gant thought, feeling more tired that he expected. Then as he became more aware, he realized it wasn’t the approaching dawn that had woken him, it was the weight of the arm thrown across his hip. He was still lying on his side but now he was facing Will and sometime during the night, Will had draped his arm over Gant’s side, his fingers splayed on the small of Gant’s back.

The warmth and weight of Will’s arm and hand on his skin sent goose bumps skittering along his spine, and Gant had to stifle a gasp as his cock rose in response to the sensation. But though Gant would have liked nothing better than to indulge his senses with Will, he acknowledged that the feelings welling in him were not just those of sexual desire. He was filled with an emotional need to take care of Will, to protect him and ensure he received whatever it was he wanted from life. He wished that Will could reciprocate the feeling, that Will could feel that same need in respect of him, but he knew that was expecting too much.

Will’s face was only inches from Gant’s. He could feel the gentle breaths wafting towards him. Gant hadn’t even realized he had lifted his hand to caress the beloved face until he saw his own hand a mere inch from Will’s face. Reluctantly, Gant lowered his hand. At least he could look his fill while Will was asleep. It was just a shame that his eyes were closed, Gant felt he could happily fall into the depths of those deep blue eyes and never come out. Smiling at his own sentimentality, Gant knew he couldn’t indulge himself like this; it would only hurt him in the end, though that was most likely going to happen anyway. It was hard to avoid when your feelings were unrequited.

Very carefully, Gant slid out from under Will’s arm but before he was free, Will mumbled something under his breath, frowned and then rolled onto his back, his arm slipping from Gant’s body. Taking one last look at Will, Gant swung his legs over and sat on the edge of the bed. He glanced over at the window and saw that dawn was indeed rising. Knowing there was no way he could get back into bed with Will, Gant stood and moved quietly to the washroom.
