5 star review for 794 A.D. in Lust In Time anthology!

I was very pleased to discover that MMGoodbook Reviews had given the Lust In Time anthology a 4.5 stars review – and my story, 794 A.D. 5 stars!

“I loved this story it was sexy and sweet. It shows that sometimes though love is hard it does overcome all obstacles. My heart went out to the two that they could never show their love publicly yet would always find a way. ”

Get swept up in the lives of the biblical David, Emperor Hadrian, barbarians from Britannia, a 19th century physician, Jewish immigrants, cowboys and Indians, Bill the Kid, Civil War, World War I soldiers, hippies, and so many more, all in search of adventure, passion, and yes, even fame.

794 A.D., by Stevie Woods, BLURB:
When the Norsemen attack the Northumbrian coast, the local farmers are called by the liege lord to help defend the Jarrow Priory. Two close friends and lovers pray they live to meet again at the end of the day.

Aland waved goodbye to his mother and sister one last time, struggling to keep a smile on his face when inside he was concerned for their safety. They stood in the doorway of their small farmstead, in the shade of the thatch roof overhang, and Aland noticed that the thatch needed some work; when he got back, he promised himself. He glanced from the roof to catch his mother’s eye and couldn’t help but see the fear lurking there. He wished he didn’t have to leave them alone and unprotected. If they failed, God forbid!

As a vassal he had no choice but to answer the call to arms from his feudal lord, Baron Lander, but he couldn’t help worrying over his mother who hadn’t been the same since father had died the year before last. In some ways his sixteen year old sister, Fira, was the one who looked after both of them, and Aland had to trust her to watch over things while he went with his lord and helped to fight off the Norsemen.

He turned away from his family and saw his dear friend and neighbour, Garrick, waving at him to hurry. Up on the hill overlooking his small fief, Aland watched as all the other vassals of Baron Lander gathered together under the watchful eye of the baron’s sergeant-at-arms, Ricker. Aland quickened his pace, smiling and nodding at Garrick as he approached the man. Garrick was a might taller than Aland, with darker colouring lightened by his bright blue eyes. Working on the land made both of them strong and muscular. Garrick was carrying a heavy axe slung over his shoulder, while Aland had brought his pitchfork, its tines sharpened enough to despatch any enemy to whatever hell he deserved.

“Good day to you, Aland. Enough to make one worry for the family, though, my friend,” Garrick said, leading the way to join the waiting throng.

“’Tis one time I envy you not having any family to worry about,” Aland replied.

Garrick nodded in response, though the look in his eyes as he glanced at Aland told a different story. “Up to us to make sure them murdering Norsemen don’t get this far.”

The Partners (Binary Stars 5: Book 1) – 25% Excerpt

Today’s 25% excerpt is from the paranormal duo anthology, Binary Stars 5. Here is a little peek into the story of The Partners from a quarter way into the story, which is available from Phaze Books:

The HeliotropeRichard looked from one to the other before he said, “Okay, as long as you only watch. Right?”

“I swear,” Bohdri agreed, giving a small bow. He kept his smile to himself. He rarely just watched but he never interfered. Servicing himself hardly counted, did it?

Chapter Two

Antoninus led the way into the room at the end of the long corridor. It was a well appointed bedroom. Whoever had designed it had good taste, Rick thought. Dominating the room was a king-sized bed. The dark blue coverlet had already been turned back, revealing pale blue silk sheets. Not far from the bed, a loveseat sat at an angle near to a window covered with heavy drapes.

Antoninus, or Anton as Rick was now beginning to think of him, walked straight to the bed and watched as Rick looked around. Bohdri moved directly to the loveseat and sat down, crossed his legs and seemed to get comfortable. A wave of embarrassment washed over Rick.

“It’s all right, Richard, relax. You are going to have a delightful time.”

Rick turned to look at Anton, his cock reacting to the look in Anton’s eyes as much as the words. He found himself walking slowly towards Anton, his heart racing as he licked his lips. God, he wanted this man – this vampire – so much it was heady.

“Undress me,” Anton said softly and Rick’s fingers shook as he reached to remove the jacket from his shoulders. “Slowly, Richard, enjoy it. Know that you are getting closer, layer by layer; know that you will soon be flying.”

“Damn, Anton, you’re not helping me calm down,” Rick said and Anton laughed.

“Probably doesn’t want you to,” Bohdri interjected. “He wants you panting for it.”

“You’re here to watch, Bohdri,” Anton said. “That means use your eyes, not your mouth.”

The words sounded harsh, but Anton’s expression was soft as he looked at Bohdri. Rick wondered just exactly what was between these two. Just friends, they said, but it seemed more than that to him. But it wasn’t his affair, and anyway he was here for something else. He turned his attention back to what he was doing, glancing up at Anton’s face as he popped the button on Anton’s slacks and pulled out his shirt. Anton might have said to go slow but Rick wanted to see the skin beneath the shirt. So he unfastened it as quickly as he could and slid the shirt off to pool at Anton’s feet.

Anton’s body was as perfect as his face; not overly muscled but just enough to show fine definition. Rick’s gaze followed the contours of his body to the flat stomach and the trail of hair that disappeared below his waistband. Rick had to touch and he carefully placed a hand on Anton’s chest. Cool, so cool. It made his hand feel hot as he brushed it over Anton’s pecs. He glanced up at Anton’s face to find the vampire watching him intently. The heat in his hands seemed to rush over him. Quickly Rick unzipped Anton’s pants and pushed them and his underwear down his legs.

Enjoy this enchanting, entertaining and thought-provoking collection, a heartfelt expression of what it means to be queer in Britain, past and present. Edited by: UK MAT (UK Meet Acquisitions Team).

My contribution, a historical story, is called FIGHTING COCKS:
BLURB : Following his father’s death, Peter is under pressure to shoulder his responsibilities as a local landowner, but all he can think about is being with his friend, Norman. Peter’s mother already considers Norman disreputable–what would she think if she really knew what he was teaching Peter in the hayloft?

“Hold there, Peter,” Norman had said.

“Master Peter!” he had stated, the demand being somewhat spoiled by his slurring the words. “You will…will show me respect.”

“Oh, I think not,” Norman had replied. “A man has to earn the right to respect. And you have not.”

There was something hard and unyielding in Norman’s words and in the look in his eye. Peter stared at him and felt the stirring in his belly that he usually only experienced alone in his bed at night. He felt embarrassed and ducked his head. Norman set him more firmly on his feet, but he didn’t move away.

“Peter?” Norman said. “Peter, look at me.”

Peter felt impelled to answer the demand in Norman’s voice and he raised his eyes. He half expected Norman to be angry and then suddenly, through the haze of his intoxication, he remembered his position.

“How…how dare—” Peter hiccupped, “dare you speak to me like that!” It was not Norman’s place to take him to task. Peter stepped back a little and he stared at Norman, ready to… Whatever he had been thinking faded away at the look in Norman’s eyes.

“You feel it too, don’t you?” Norman asked softly. Peter licked his lips but no words would come. “I have watched you,” Norman went on. “You have never looked at the girls in the village; indeed, you’ve hardly seemed to notice those who looked at you.” Norman smiled.

Peter opened his mouth, closed it again as he tried to gather his thoughts. He tried again. “Feel it?” he queried.

Norman pressed closer, and Peter felt the pressure of Norman’s groin against his thigh and he gasped at the hardness he felt there. Colour flooded his cheeks as he felt his own prick rise in response and Norman laughed softly. “Oh yes,” Norman said, “You feel it.”

Received my print copy of PAST SHADOWS

I blogged only yesterday about the release of one of my novels in print and then in today’s post I received my print copy of another of my works.

The historical ghost anthology, PAST SHADOWS, was released last month by MLR Press. My story, DEATH’S DESIRE, is amongst it pages, along with excellent stories by Charlie Cochrane and Jardonn Smith.  I knew, of course, that the book was on the way, but to actually handle it, and then put it on my shelf alongside my copy of BEYOND THE VEIL – well I can’t really explain what that felt like. I guess if you are an author you will know what it feels like, if you’re not perhaps you wouldn’t quite understand.

After all, it’s just words on paper, isn’t it? Well, no, not really. It’s hours, weeks, months of sweating out every word, making sure it said exactly what you wanted. Reading it, re-reading it and having the courage to send it off and let someone else (often more than one someone else) judge it and decide if your words are worthy of being put onto that piece of pristine white paper.

I think I should stop now before I embarrass myself <g> Suffice to say, I’m excited!

Surprise! Early Release…

It was a total surprise when I was informed last night by MLR Press that the Anthology, Past Shadows, had been released.  I had not expected this book to be out until next month.  A surprise it might have been but it was also very exciting.

Past Shadows is my first release with MLR Press and it contains my gay historical ghost story, Death’s Desire, amongst its pages. I am in excellent company with Charlie Cochrane and Jardonn Smith in this anthology.

And what about that lovely cover? I think it fits perfectly with the theme of the book – gay historical ghost stories. Kudos to Deana at MLR!
