Yet another delightful 4 Star review, this time from Fallen Angel Reviews:

“This was a different style of writing but very effective. I liked how neither of them rushed to take control of the situation but behaved in a quiet and responsible manner suitable to the time.”

I was very pleased to discover that Wave over at Jessewave’s Review Blog had given me a delightful review and a wonderful 4 Stars!

“If you’re looking for a short historical romance with two likable protagonists who are obviously in love with each other, and can’t wait to get between the sheets once they know the lay of the land, Smoke Screen should be on your list of books to buy. Definitely recommended.”

New Release – Conversations!

Filed under: writing — Stevie Woods @ 4:35 pm

siplogoJust released from Torquere Press, my new Contemporary short story, CONVERSATIONS!

BLURB:   Craig has known John for a long time. They are friends, close friends, but then Craig poses the question that perhaps they are closer than either of them had realized. Deciding to test the theory they got out on a date. After dinner and a trip back to John’s place, one thing leads to another, and another. Soon they’re swapping fantasies. Which one will they try first?

Here’s a little taste:

The Question

“Hey, Craig,” John said as he pulled up a chair at his friend’s table. He always knew he could find Craig in Pop’s Coffee Shop around five-thirty most evenings, but certainly on a Friday.

Craig looked up from his book and smiled. “Hey, John.”

“What’re ya doin’?”

“Reading.”

“Yeah, but reading what?”

“The history of…” Craig paused, sighed and added, “John, do you really want to know or is this just your usual preamble?”

“Usual preamble?” John frowned. Did he have a usual preamble?

“You want us to spend the evening together and you track me down in here, make small talk before you ask me out for a meal. Then later we go back to your place and either watch a DVD or play a game of poker or whatever.”

“Ah.” John smiled. “So, Craig?”

“So… What?”

“Which will it be? Meal followed by DVD or a game of poker?”

Craig grinned and shook his head. “Okay, John, either or both.” Craig stuffed his book back into his bag and then downed the rest of his coffee. Still holding the cup, Craig raised his eyes, narrowing them as he asked, “John, are we… dating?”

About the book

Nobleman Zeke is on his way to meet with his betrothed partner when his carriage breaks down, leaving him stranded. Crispin is leaving his cheating lover when he comes across Zeke on the road. The chemistry is immediate, and Zeke has never been more grateful for a little magic, or for a little fate. Are he and Crispin meant to be?

An excerpt from the book

He lay as still as he could, afraid to disturb the carriage where it lay across him. Zeke knew he was extremely lucky to be alive; he was trapped under the remains of his conveyance, but miraculously he was virtually unhurt. He had been lying there for what seemed like hours, but, as he couldn’t move his right arm to check his chronometer, he didn’t know how long he had really been there in the middle of nowhere. He attempted again to move the weight from off his body, putting all his strength into the thought, but! he was too weak to move such a large item on his own.He tried to keep his spirits up, but it was growing colder and the light was fast dying. If help didn’t come soon it was possible that he could die out here during the night.

Ruefully, he thought perhaps he should have taken his father’s advice and traveled with at least a manservant (as he refused to arrive with a retinue), but he had always been stubborn. His father’s idea of their position in society galled him at the best of times and, for this occasion, he’d flatly refused to flaunt it. Instead he decided to take the light Cabriolet with only his luggage for company. Stubborn pride, his father had said and for once he couldn’t disagree; perhaps this time he would pay a high price for it.

As if in answer to his silent prayers, a wash of light spread over the area, then faded, only to appear again a few seconds later. Zeke tried to turn his head towards the road behind him, but he couldn’t see properly.

“Gods, please let them see the carriage, let them find me,” Zeke whispered.

Torquere Press have re-released the Regency gay romance, SMOKE SCREEN, my first ever publication originally released in June 2007, as a Single Shot Classic.

It is quite sobering to realize that I have been a published author now for over two years – and no less exciting that I still find the whole process thrilling!

About the book

When Kyle finally gets the nerve up to tell Matt how he feels, Matt reacts badly, freaking out. A lot. Dejected, Kyle heads for the closest bar, where he meets a hot guy who comes on to him, which does a lot for his sagging ego. Just when things are about to get interesting, though, Matt shows up with a declaration of his own. Will it be the hot stranger or the man he loves?

An excerpt from the book

I’d rolled the dice and lost, though not in the way I expected. I hoped — more, I really believed — Matt loved me and that he only needed to admit it to himself and then to me. I hadn’t thought that he’d always accepted it but simply refused to allow free rein to his feelings, or even to consider mine.

I was angry and terribly disappointed that it seemed so easy for Matt to put his career before his feelings. To me there was nothing more important than love. I would never have put my career before the man I love, the man I had lost before I ever really had him. That thought made me both angry and sad.

I needed to stop thinking about this, it wasn’t helping; nothing could. All I was doing was churning up my emotions. I had to accept it and move on. I just didn’t know how; I’d carried this dream with me for so long and now it was gone. Still, I was determined not to sit around and mourn.

I’d shed a few tears of angry frustration when I first arrived home yesterday evening. I spent a couple of hours trying to decide what had gone wrong, but deep down I knew it wasn’t my problem, it was Matt’s. I finally fell asleep, but it was troubled by dreams and I awoke very early this morning still feeling confused and upset.

I couldn’t face staying in bed any longer and got up. I took a quick shower and then went to the kitchen for some coffee. I made myself some toast, but couldn’t eat it. I felt sick to my stomach.

I took my coffee through to the living room and sat on the sofa. I had to make a decision. The reason I’d plucked up the courage to put my cards on the table with Matt was that I nursed my desire long enough, it was time to go after what I wanted. I didn’t want to be on my own any longer, and why should I have to be when I was in love and I was pretty sure it was returned.

I’d been hurt once, seemed a lifetime ago now, but for a long time my work had been enough. As time passed I came to realize that I wanted more. I wanted someone special to come home to and relax with, to share my life, my heart and my soul with. I wanted Matt! Damn!

Now I knew that couldn’t be. I closed my eyes and let the sigh escape. I should’ve known better, life rarely gave you what you wanted.

About the book

Daniel doesn’t really understand why his lover, Matthias, has to leave him. Matthias doesn’t know just how to explain that he has a job to go back to, and that he probably won’t be able to see Danny again, at least not in this lifetime. The two lovers take advantage of their last few moments together before Matthias has to go, but Danny isn’t sure he can make it through the days that follow. Can he find the faith to go on, and the strength to wait for Matthias’ love?

An excerpt from the book

Matthias sat on the side of the bed just watching Daniel sleep. The sheet had slid down as far as his stomach and it took all Matthias’ willpower not to reach out and caress the honey-colored skin. Daniel always was a rough sleeper, tossing and turning and occasionally kicking Matthias’ legs. Matthias didn’t care; just being able to sleep beside Daniel had been a blessing for him.! Making love with him had been miraculous. Tears pricked at his eyes at the thought that perhaps never again…

“Matt?” Daniel said sleepily, rubbing at his eyes. He glanced at the window seeing it was hardly light yet. “Why are you sitting there?” He smiled, patting the mattress next to him. “It’s much nicer in here with me.”

“I…I need to talk with you and, if I was in there with you, we wouldn’t talk.”

Daniel laughed, “Heck no. Come on we can talk later, there’s a lot better things you can do with that lovely mouth of yours.”

“Danny, please.”

Daniel’s smile faded, as he finally understood that Matt was serious about wanting to talk. “Sure, whatever.” He frowned. “Matt, why do I get the feeling I’m not going to like this?”

Matthias sighed and got to his feet. He walked toward the window, lifted a slat and looked outside. He was trying to delay the inevitable; he didn’t want to say what he had to, but he knew it was a futile exercise and the delay was only making Daniel more anxious, he could feel it.

Turning back, he said bluntly, “I have to leave, Daniel, and…”

“Leave? Why? How long for?” Daniel threw the covers back and swung his legs over the side of the bed so he was sitting facing Matt.

“I am so sorry, Danny,” Matthias said taking a step forward and forcing himself to stop. “I have to leave very soon, and I won’t be coming back.” As he watched the emotions flicker across Daniel’s expressive face, Matthias felt his stomach twist and the ache in his heart felt too great to bear.

About the book

Zeke and Crispin, who met in Stevie Woods’ story, The Wrong Path, are surprised to learn that the accident that brought them together was no accident. Determined to get to the bottom of things, Crispin takes Zeke into town to meet with Zeke’s father. Zeke has more than information on his mind; he needs to tell his father that he’s no longer interested in a marriage of convenience. Will Zeke and Crispin be able to make a life together, or will a powerful, determined man be able to interfere with fate?

An excerpt from the book

Crispin rested his chin in his hand as he let his gaze wash over Zeke. There was much to admire in his sparkling hazel eyes and gold streaked brown hair, his long neck and wide shoulders. Crispin had thoroughly enjoyed exploring the beautiful body that was presently hidden by Zeke’s clothing. Though, watching Zeke across the breakfast table, Crisp! in couldn’t help but be a little concerned by his new lover’s distraction. New lover… It was almost impossible to believe they had only met the night before, and a man who had been stranger when Crispin had found him under the wheels of his carriage, was now the most important person in his life.

Yet, when they had awoken that morning, Crispin couldn’t help that his first thought had been a very real fear, but Zeke had quickly dispelled his Crispin’s concern that their coupling of the night before would be only a one time event. Crispin had fallen fast and hard for the handsome stranger, and he couldn’t bear the thought that Zeke might have wanted to continue his journey to meet the man his father wished him to marry. However, Zeke had convinced him in a most delicious way that Crispin was the only partner he wanted. So, why was Zeke so distracted now?

With sudden insight, Crispin asked, “Is it your father that’s worrying you?”

Zeke glanced up at Crispin, and immediately he flushed. “Oh, I’m sorry, Crispin. I was so busy thinking about my problem that I shut you out. I should have realized how it might be unsettling for you.”

Crispin shook his head. “I wonder if I’ll ever get used to you knowing how I feel all the time,” he said.

Zeke smiled. “Clearly not all the time. And, to answer your question, yes I was thinking about how my father will react to my returning home instead of being half way across the county meeting my prospective partner.” He reached out and took Crispin’s hand. “Instead I’ll be bringing home with me the man I shall share my life with.”

Crispin held on to Zeke, unable to help grimacing as he replied. “Yes, a nobody as opposed to the heir to a great fortune. I wish I had more to offer, something your father would approve of.”

“You’re not a nobody, Crispin. You are the most important person in my life.” He shrugged, cocking his head to one side, and added, “And if my father can’t be happy for me, can’t put my feelings above his avarice, then he doesn’t care for me as much as you do.”

“Can’t you read your family members as easily as you do me?” Crispin asked curiously.

“I told you I’ve never been able to sense anyone as clearly as I do you.” Zeke smiled. “I have to keep my barriers raised, or you would overwhelm me at the most inconvenient times.” Crispin blushed as Zeke continued. “Most of my family I can sense as readily as most of the general population, but my father has always been something of a mystery to me. He is the only person who can shield his feelings from me. He has a similar ability to mine, in that his gift is linked to emotions, but while he cannot sense feelings to the extent I can, he does have the ability to affect others’ emotions.”

“So you don’t really know the strength of his feelings for you?” Crispin frowned but didn’t say anything else, forgetting for a moment that he couldn’t hide anything from Zeke.

“Ask the question, Crispin,” Zeke said gently.

“What question?” Crispin prevaricated.

“I don’t know what question precisely; I only know there is something you are struggling not to ask me. We will have no secrets, Crispin. Agreed?”
