Filed under: website, writing — Stevie Woods @ 9:13 pm

pic-111.jpgSeptember is the fourth anniversary for my publisher, Torquere Press and as part of its celebrations it is holding a Scavenger Hunt with a prize of a Sony eReader, loaded with a book from each of the participating authors – quite a prize!  The Hunt consists of a button hidden on each of the author’s websites containing a different letter of the alphabet, collect all the letters and submit your entry on the Torquere Press site.  The Hunt begins on the 1st and continues throughout the month of September.

Review for ‘Cane’

The review is up on the site now and it is even better to see it properly posted! Wow!

Little excerpt:

CANE by Stevie Woods is a fast paced and passionate historical romance that transported me back in time to experience America during this turbulent era. The compelling characters drew me into their lives, stirring strong emotions, as I watched them be affected by surrounding events. CANE is a very memorable story and I encourage others to add it to their reading list.

Chicken and the egg

Filed under: writing — Stevie Woods @ 8:33 pm

Musing today on the old adage – and how it relates to writing, publishing, promoting.

I am first, foremost and always a writer but of course the whole point of writing is to be read, so I need a publisher. Finding one is time consuming and naturally takes one away from writing, that is bad enough but expected. What I didn’t expect (naive of me, I accept) was the amount of promoting I would have to do. Things have changed in the publishing world it seems and gone are the days that once you got past the acceptance and editing stage, a writer’s work was done, now it only seems to be the beginning. I guess I shouldn’t grumble though, cause the very leaps in publishing which have caused the change in procedure leaving a chunk of the promotion in the author’s hands, is also what helps a lot of small presses give new authors that chance.

The point of this ramble is that I’ve been trying to get stuck into my new novel for the last two weeks but my mind has been so caught up with the need to push my book, and therefore myself, that I have hardly to time to write more than a few pages.

Frustrating – I need to be able to write to have something to promote! The chicken and the egg………

Promotional interviews

Have requested a few interviews, as suggested by my Editor among others. Got one lined up by Torquere for next month and another one at Joyfully Reviewed also due at the beginning of September. Completed the questionnaire from Joyfully tonight – some indepth questions there!

Still waiting to hear from others, but this seems like a good start. Still close to Cane’s publication and the Men in Uniform II Anthology comes out on 12th September.

It does all seem to be happening at once.

Review for ‘Cane’

Filed under: writing — Stevie Woods @ 9:13 pm

canesmall.jpgThis morning before heading out for work I checked my messages and found I had received notification of a Review for Cane to be posted by RomanceJunkies. A bit nervous about opening the message – my first official Review (not discounting Kiernan’s which was great) from a ‘professional source’. Anyhow I was delighted to find it was very positive and they gave the story the maximum 5 ribbons! Waiting to hear when it is going to be published on their site.

Catching up!

Not posted for over a week, first too busy finalising my latest short story and then submitting it to Torquere.

Then I couldn’t get on the Net for a few days when I lost my modem link, heck the trouble I had getting that sorted! No wonder it’s been in the news lately how much we spend on broadband ‘help’ lines!

Finally managed to start my next novel over the weekend – a fantasy this time. Had trouble getting my head around how to start it but all good now. At least I got the first few pages done.

Also my acceptance for the EPIC lists came through today so I’ll have to surf on there a bit later. Having been organising interviews plugging my writing too – it’s all go!

It seems published authors have to spend as much time promoting one book as they do trying to write the next one *sigh*

I’m calm, really!

Torquere  Having to go to work and continue with ‘normal life’ is not easy at the moment. I’m not the most relaxed person at the best of times, so with the release of my novel yesterday I’m on tenterhooks. Which is a waste of time really cause it’s far too early to know how the book is going! As I said – I’m calm, really, sure!! My way to try and relax, I’m gonna add a little snippet from Cane that I really like – a moment of recognition:

Pieter had been home for barely a day before he saw Joss again. Pieter had learned from one of the overseers where the young slave was working and finding him on his own stacking tools at the edge of the field was perfect. For Pieter, the difference four years had made to the young man was breathtaking. Joss had always been tall and slim with lively dark eyes, but now he had added muscle and carried himself with grace. The twenty-year-old Joss brought only one word to Pieter’s mind – beautiful.

They stared at each other, both smiling and both apparently unsure of what to say or do. Then without conscious thought, they found themselves wrapped up in each other’s arms, laughing and both talking at once.

“Pieter!”

Tillie’s voice behind him sent shivers of warmth up Pieter’s spine. She was carrying a large basket of food, lunch for the overseers, Pieter guessed. He had missed her so much. He had wanted to embrace her when he first saw her on his return, but with his father’s presence in the room it hadn’t been possible. With a last squeeze to the shoulders, he released Joss and turned to Tillie. Pieter swung his surrogate sister around, grinning happily.

“Oh God, I have missed you two so much!” Pieter said but found his eyes kept drifting toward Joss.

When Pieter had discovered his penchant for men in Amsterdam, everything had finally made sense for him. He had always assumed he was simply shy when it came to the girls he’d met growing up, the only one he had ever felt comfortable with was Tillie, but Pieter came to realize that he simply wasn’t interested in women that way. He gravitated toward men and they to him. Barend had keyed him into the truth. The same truth Pieter recognized as he looked at Joss now. The young slave couldn’t take his eyes from Pieter either.

Release of my novel, Cane

Well the day is here at last, my novel Cane is available for sale. Not surprisingly I am very excited.

This morning (6.30) I went to Torquere to make sure it was up so I could do a link to my website. It was – and there was also a Review from Kiernan Kelly and a very nice review it was too!

Kiernan Kelly, bestselling Torquere Press author, writes: Set during the volatile years preceding the American Civil War, Stevie Woods brings us a novel that is heavily laden with emotion, that examines the temperament of the day with a fine and compassionate hand – the hope and hopelessness, the dignity and futility of a world where men are enslaved both physically and spiritually.

Pieter is a privileged young man who nonetheless is held hostage by his father’s manipulations; Joss is a slave on Pieter’s father’s sugar cane plantation. Heartbreak is all that the two can expect from their clandestine and forbidden affair. Only Pieter’s father’s death allows Pieter to return to his island home, but finds that it is too late – Joss had been sold years before.

Finding himself in the United States, Pieter is pitted against the very same issues that had torn his heart to shreds on his father’s plantation. What Pieter discovers among the stalks of sugar cane is a new love, and old friend, and a dangerous hate that stalks his every step.

Woods treats the sensitive subject matter compassionately in this novel of lost love and newfound hope.

Promotion

Need to spread my wings a bit when it comes to promotion, so says my editor and I know she’s right. I had a novelette published last weekend, 28th July, and my novel is due to be released next Wednesday, 8th August. I’ve arranged to host a LJ day for my publisher’s social list this coming Sunday and to answer questions the following Saturday, again for the social list, both with a view to promoting my writing – and hopefully my sales!

I’m also going to join a variety of Erotic writer/reader organisations where I can ‘pimp’ myself and hopefully gain insight into how to increase my readership.
